Experience the taste of history with our Azorean Sourdough Starter (Organic Dehydrated) — a living heirloom that traces its roots to the island of São Miguel, Azores, and the early Portuguese settlers of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. Passed down through generations, this time-honored starter made its journey from the Azores to New Bedford, MA, preserving a centuries-old artisan breadmaking tradition.

By 1871, local newspapers celebrated New Bedford as an “Eden-like city by the sea,” where Portuguese culture and cuisine flourished — and this starter continues that legacy today.

This is my second order of this sour dough starter. I am delighted to learn that there are many Portuguese people living in the eastern part of our United States. I am from Hawaii where we have a large population of Portuguese people. I am half Azorean Portuguese and half Madeiran Portuguese. I grew up eating many different Portuguese dishes and my mom made sweet bread. Also for your information, I have an aunt who, for many years, has a Portuguese dance group. She has traveled to Portugal a few times to further her knowledge of the Portuguese dances. She also would visit many schools educating the children on the Portuguese culture. Keep up your great work promoting the Portuguese foods.
I was nervous to try sourdough again, but this starter made it foolproof. It bubbled up and produced gorgeous loaves!
